Mona by Numbers (1978)

In this installation at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Lacy sat inside a glass-enclosed booth resembling the Mona Lisa repository at the Louvre, completing her Mona Lisa paint-by-number replica daily for two weeks. Questioning the relative lack of visibility of women artists through- out history, she ironically re-positioned herself as relevant maker and historic figure.

Curated by Lynn Hershman and produced by that artist’s Floating Museum, an artist-run initiative for site-specific performances and installations, in an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, California.
