Three Love Stories (1975-76)
Like many performance artists from this era, Lacy used her body to push into art into taboo territory to examine the relationships between horror and beauty, inside and outside, using the physical body as an instrument of exploration. In this narrative series, Lacy explores themes she will return to later: the construction of narratives, in this case through the use of language referencing a relationship between bodies and psychological states. Three forms of storytelling are referenced--the gothic, the romantic, and the pornographic—through eccentric and stereotypical monologues that refer, and are graphically depicted by, body parts.
