Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, 2018-2019
Featuring Code 33 (from The Oakland Projects)

WallsTurnedSideways-15.jpg

Walls Turned Sideways shows work by artists from across the nation that addresses the criminal justice system, mass incarceration, and the prison-industrial complex. The exhibition includes artworks that take social justice issues as a subject matter; and position the prison and court systems as structures for dismantling through institutional critique.  The show recognizes the artist as a figure capable of changing society and poses the questions: What is the social role and responsibility of the artist in times of political urgency? Lacy has long worked with criminal justice issues beginning with violence against women in the 70s and in this piece she shows Code 33, by Lacy, Unique Holland and Julio Morales, part of the comprehensive ten year series, The Oakland Projects.
